MA in TEYL

MA in Teaching English to Young Learners (by distance)

Programme leader: Dr Annie Hughes

This MA Masters course in teaching English to Young Learners is a two-year part-time professional development distance learning programme delivered by the Department of Education, University of York, UK.
This Teaching English to Young Learners distance programme is a full Masters Degree course and successful participants will be awarded the degree from the University of York on satisfactory completion of all module assignments.

Who is the MA in Teaching English to Young Learners programme intended for?

The TEYL distance programme from the University of York's Department of Education is specially designed to cater for the needs of a range of professionals currently, or about to be, involved in aspects of teaching English to young learners, including children up to 16 years of age at pre-school, primary and secondary level. The types of professional looking for such a distance programme will include teachers, heads, school managers, teacher trainers, advisors, writers and publishers.

When can I join the MA in TEYL programme?

The TEYL programme currently offers 3 entry points per year: October, March and August (option to study the intensive introductory module and intensive mid-course module face-to-face).

What does the MA in TEYL programme involve and where can I study?

The programme involves attendance at two intensive introductory modules, either online, or face-to-face at a partner learning centre. An intensive module will take place at the beginning of each of the two years of study. Thereafter, the course is based on continuously assessed self-study modules, which the student follows in their own time from anywhere in the world, working to modular deadlines throughout the study year.
Students on the Masters (MA) Teaching English to Young Learners course will need to devote approximately 13-18 hours study time each week for each module throughout the course. Access to a classroom for investigation purposes is desirable, particularly in the second year of the course when the student will carry out a small-scale action research project.

MA in TEYL programme outline and content

The MA in TEYL distance programme is taught by way of an Intensive Introductory Module at the start of year one, followed by four multimedia self study modules. There will be an Intensive Mid-Course Module at the start of year two, followed by four more multimedia self study modules.
These modules have been specially written and developed for this programme by the department TEYL specialists. They contain a mixture of materials including: module outlines, papers, notes and articles, videoed interviews, video presentations, video examples of work in action in classrooms, audio taped interviews, professional reflection activities and assignment outlines. The modules are supported by books, e-mail and continuous one-to-one support from a supervisor. Each study module lasts approximately three months, allowing for study, reflection, research, writing time and mailing time. Within each module, participants can focus on teaching children of different age groups.

Assessment and supervision

Continuous assessment on the programme is carried out by way of each Intensive Module and eight assignments and projects without the requirement to submit one large dissertation. Each student will be assigned a supervisor at the start of the distance programme who will maintain regular contact with them throughout the Masters course in Teaching English to Young Learners.
